Nebelhexë - Interviews
Nebelhexë comments for the Goth for Earth - Think Green, Wear Black, Act Creative Campaign
The black scene isn't necessarily known for its
environmental dedication.
Are you in favour of giving more attention to this issue
in the scene (i.e. in magazines)?
Actually, I think the alternative music scenes always had a great deal of environmental awareness. Already when I was really young, the Alternative, Gothic, New Wave and Metal artists that inspired me were talking about the Earth and animal-right issues. Already then, I heard artists talk about being vegetarian and about the dangers of global pollution. So I think there always has been a general awareness of the issues amongst alternative people. And then of course there are artists like myself, who talk a lot about our human nature - "our nature within" and "our primal animal instincts" - and thus how to create a balance between modern city life and the natural environment. To me it is very important that people start to understand their inner nature and realise that we, like all other animals, are merely living beings that are dependent on the planet's resources. If you respect the Earth and the animals around, it means that you respect yourself. Thus, if you respect yourself, you also respect your environment.
Like I said, I think people from the alternative music scenes tend to be quite aware of environmental issues, but there probably are still many individuals that are not quite sure about what they can do practically in their every-day lives. So yes, I think it would be a great idea if magazines and festivals would put out some practical guide-lines and infos, maybe have some advertisements for organic foods, organic living and environmental organisations.
How about the "private" artist, are you also "green-aware" at home? Have you already changed anything in your personal behaviour? Any plans for the future?
I think I always have been green-aware really. Respect for nature and her creatures has always been important to me. I also grew up in a neighbourhood that was full of hippies, hehe, so I learned a lot from them about organic foods, about recycling, etc. I always preferred organic food and organic cosmetics, I am extremely paranoid about hormones in food and skin-care and thus I don't buy anything that has those horrible parabenes. There is so much bad shit in food and skin-care products and one really has to read the package carefully. There are so many products out there that are called "natural"... but when you read the package, it is not natural at all. There are so many products that are advertised as "no sugar"... but they in fact contain artificial sweeteners that are far more dangerous than sugar... People should really realise how the big food and cosmetic corporations lie to them intentionally to sell more unhealthy products.
I am also pretty careful not to waste food, or water, or electricity, and it really irritates me when I see people that waste natural resources without a thought... and I usually tell them...
What's the most urgent need for action in your opinion?
I think every individual has to understand that his or her everyday actions are important. People have to learn that each one of them can make a difference. Just to do little things can help a lot. So I think it is important to put out lots of information to the public about how they can make a difference.
I also think it is very important to make people understand how the big corporations destroy and pollute big areas of natural grounds all over the world. How they make animals suffer in large animal factories, how they make money on keeping people overweight and unhealthy and how they feed us their poison with lies, just to make big money. Go to www.thecorporation.com and read about the horrendous stuff they are doing.
For example, "The Body Shop" was once founded by an idealist woman who wanted to make a difference and offer good, natural and eco-conscious skin-care. Some years ago however, a big corporation took over the Body Shop and now the Body Shop products are full of chemicals and hormones just like any other commercial product. There is nothing natural about the Body Shop anymore, yet the Body Shop still advertises their products as being "all-natural": bull-shit. But how many consumers know about the change?
I think education is the most important action to take...
Thank you very much for your time, Nebelhexë!
